What remains reliable in most cases
- Year Pillar—reliable when the date is outside the worldwide Li Chun boundary dates. On a possible boundary date, exact local time and location are required.
- Month Pillar—reliable away from the exact month-starting solar term. A transition date can remain provisional without time and location.
- Day Pillar and Day Master—calculated from the recorded civil date. Jade Zodiac changes the day at civil midnight; some Ba Zi schools instead use a late-Zi (子) rollover at 23:00, but this calculator does not.
- Partial element balance—counted only across the known pillars. It is useful context, but it is not a complete-chart strength assessment.
What an honest reading withholds
The birth time sets the Hour Pillar — one of the twelve two-hour periods (時辰). Without it, we leave that pillar out entirely, and with it go three conclusions that depend on the full chart:
- Day Master strength — whether your core element is well-supported or drained needs all four pillars weighed.
- Favorable elements (用神) — the elements to lean into follow from strength, so they need your birth time to be reliable.
- 10-Year Luck Pillars (Da Yun) — the decade cycle itself advances from your Month Pillar (gender sets its direction), but its favorable/challenging classification follows from your favorable elements — which need the full chart.
That is a limitation stated plainly—not a broken reading. The available pillars can still support reflection, while any boundary-sensitive identity remains visibly provisional until time and place resolve it.
Why guessing noon is worse than saying "unknown"
Many calculators quietly substitute 12:00 noon when no time is given. That doesn't produce a weaker reading — it produces a wrong one that looks complete: a fabricated Hour Pillar feeds a fabricated strength assessment, fabricated favorable elements, and a fabricated luck-cycle timeline, none of them flagged.
An omitted Hour Pillar is the opposite: honest, visible, and correctable. When you find your real birth time, the Hour-dependent sections can unlock. If a Year or Month result was labeled provisional, the recovered time and place may resolve it differently; no pillar was silently guessed.
How to find your birth time
- Birth certificate. Many countries record the time of birth. In the US it is usually on the long-form certificate (the hospital/vault copy) — the short form often omits it; request the long form from your state's vital-records office.
- Hospital records. Hospitals keep delivery records for years — sometimes decades; a medical-records request can recover the time.
- Baby book, announcement card, or family letters. Times were often written down at the moment.
- Parents and relatives. Even a part of day ("just before dinner", "middle of the night") narrows the twelve two-hour periods considerably.
If you recover an approximate time: clock time isn't solar time — without a birth place, the hour is accurate to about ±1 時辰, so add your birth city when you enter it.
One school difference: some Ba Zi traditions roll the Day Pillar at 23:00. Jade Zodiac uses the recorded civil date and changes the day at midnight, so a 23:30 birth keeps the same Day Pillar and Day Master as noon on that date; exact time still adds the Hour Pillar.

Does birth place matter too?
Birth place matters when converting clock time to true solar time and when resolving an exact solar-term boundary. Longitude and the historical time zone can change which side of a boundary or two-hour period the birth instant falls on.
Why not just use noon as a default?
Using noon invents a birth instant and can fabricate the Hour Pillar, falsely resolve a solar-term boundary, and distort every conclusion built on those values. Marking time as unknown keeps uncertainty visible and correctable.
